We find where the motion is missing.
Hands-on joint and soft tissue work that loosens what’s stuck, so the rest of your treatment plan can actually take hold.
What It Is
Manual therapy is hands-on care: your Doctor of Physical Therapy uses joint mobilization, soft tissue work, and stretching techniques to restore motion that's gone missing and calm tissue that's gotten irritable. The people who get the most out of it are usually the ones who've already tried stretching it out on their own for a few weeks and know by now that this particular stiffness isn't going to work itself loose.
A joint that's lost its normal glide, or a muscle that's guarding around an old injury, often won't respond to exercise alone. Manual therapy addresses that directly, hands on the actual tissue, so the movement work that follows has something to build on.
It's rarely the whole plan by itself. It's the part that opens things up so the exercises, the strengthening, and the rest of your program can actually do their job. Leave a stuck joint alone and the muscles around it usually keep guarding it, which is how a stiff shoulder quietly turns into a stiff neck and a sore lower back from compensating for both.

No. A massage therapist focuses broadly on relaxation and circulation. Your Doctor of Physical Therapy targets a specific joint or tissue restriction found in your evaluation, and follows it immediately with the movement work that keeps the change from fading.
Most people feel pressure or a stretch, not sharp pain. We work within your tolerance and adjust in real time based on how your tissue responds, so you're never pushed further than makes sense for that day.
Most PPO plans cover manual therapy as part of a standard physical therapy visit, and we verify your exact benefits before your first session so there's no surprise on your bill. Questions before then? Call us at (401) 999-7325.
